Witness VR: Crimes Against Ukraine’s Humanity
"Witness VR: Crimes Against Ukraine's Humanity" is a Virtual Reality documentary that uses innovative techniques, combining 360-degree and phone footage converted into VR, to immerse viewers in the reality of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Ukrainian people. By placing viewers at the scenes of these atrocities, the experience allows them to feel like witnesses, emphasizing the importance of securing justice and accountability.
The project adopts a survivor-centric approach, featuring testimonies and scenes that focus on mass atrocity crimes, including sexual violence in conflict, abduction of children, extrajudicial killings, and torture. Filmed on location in Bucha, Irpin, Borydanka, and Kyiv, the documentary captures powerful, firsthand accounts from survivors, amplifying their voices and ensuring their stories are heard. By narrating the history of attacks on Ukraine and the systematic efforts to erase its identity, "Witness VR" aims to galvanize international action, compelling governments, decision-makers, and the global community to respond decisively and support justice and reparations for the victims.
Produced by Upstream XR in collaboration with Aspichi, a Ukrainian VR production company, "Witness VR" was developed in partnership with the Ukrainian Office of the Prosecutor General and the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscoring a collective commitment to seeking justice and solidarity with the Ukrainian cause.
